In the early 1930s, some people found that auxin in plants plays an important regulatory role in plant growth and development. Later, scientists discovered a few types of substances from many kinds of plants. They also played a significant promoting or inhibiting effect on the growth and metabolism of plants. They are now collectively referred to as plant hormones. It is now known that the most common natural hormones in higher plants are auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and ethylene.
