中国古代剧场在其正式确立——于宋代形成专职化的剧场以前,走过了一个很长的发展历程,有一个职能逐渐明确和固定的剧场演变史。以往由于文献载述的语焉不详,人们对于中国古代剧场,尤其是早期演出场所的认识,一直未能深入一步。近年来文物资料的陆续发现,为我们出示了日渐丰富的形象素材,这便是本文写作的主要契机和依据。与任何地区民族的戏剧一样,中国戏剧也源出于原始人类的宗教性摹仿仪式歌舞。这类根基于原始交感巫术观念的活动,最初只是出于宗教氛围和巫术内容的需要,选择合适的自然地形,如在山林空地、崖壑坝坪 Before its formal establishment, the ancient Chinese theater went through a long course of development before the formation of a full-time theater in the Song Dynasty, with an increasingly clear and fixed evolution of the theater. As with any national theater in any region, Chinese drama is also sourced from religious mimicry and song and dance of primitive humans.
