The “terrorist” of American writer John Updike is an important post-September 11 literary work. While describing the panic brought by the terrorist attacks, the work also calls for people to pay attention to the alienation problem in the modern American society and to seek ways to overcome the alienation. This paper analyzes the causes of terrorists by using the alienation theory of Erich Fromm and explores the important role played by love and care in the process of eliminating and alienation.
