西乡穆家沟剖面笔石非常丰富,保存完好,是讨论O-S分界的又一个良好剖面。本文记述了五峰组的网状笔石6属14种,包括2新属4新种,其中刺网发育的类型可能营表层水漂浮生活。在Paraorthograptuspacificus带刺网发育和带腹刺类型笔石占绝对优势,赋存岩性亦以含碳、硅质板岩居多,还原性强;而其余层位的漂浮型刺网笔石可能与具底栖功能的栅笔石类所占百分比相近,岩石含碳、硅亦少,还原性弱,说明前者可能具上层富氧水和下层强缺氧水典型双层结构,后者具上层富氧水和下层弱还原水结构。
