老挝琅勃拉邦的南传佛教寺院鼓乐和吟唱艺术含有如下几种社会文化与艺术功能:寺院法事及日常传讯器物;娱乐性鼓乐或鼓舞的伴奏乐器;寺产和重要保存文物;寺院的标志性、象征性文化器物;寺院壁画、雕塑的文化和艺术素材;旅游业的标志性文化景观及装饰物。在研究策略上,一方面,我们不能只满足于采用“本质主义”的思维和眼光,仅从“宗教艺术”、“民族艺术”等“表象性”(或本真性)层面角度出发,而是应该带上“隐喻性”的思维,用立体、多相和批评性的文化眼光去理解和看待它。另一方面,通过对南传佛教文化特质丛,尤其是以“宫廷与寺院为中心”这个最重要的深层文化特质进行阐释性的挖掘和解析,将有助于我们从“历时——共时”的整体层面,去有效地把握和解决于云南与周边南传佛教亚文化圈形成和发展过程中产生的种种矛盾问题。
