In order to study the gene networks that govern the development of petal shape, we screened mutants that affected the development of the lateral petals in the leguminous plants. We identified two independent mutants: kew2 and kew3. The two mutants had a similar phenotype: the lateral petals of the mutant were transformed into abdominal petals similar to the wild type. Genetic analysis showed that kew3 and the reported kew1 allele were controlled by the same single recessive locus. The kew1 mutant is located in the locus KEW1 and is orthologous to the pea K locus. Genetic analysis of kew2 suggests that there are other genetic factors that interact with kew in the development of the lateral petals. Analysis of these mutants and gene cloning help elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of symmetrical flower pattern development on both sides and understand the evolutionary pathways of symmetrical flower patterns on both sides.
