中华民族历来有续修方志的优良传统。在这个悠久的历史过程中,先贤们留下了许多宝贵的经验:续修时对前志缺载的门类或略载的重要文献要有所增补,对前志所载事实有错误的地方要予以纠正,以及如何正确处理好前志与后志的关系等等。同时,也留有教训:主要是一些修志者在续修时对前志缺少应有的尊重,轻改妄删或无端贬责等。对旧志续修的经验教训的探究、借鉴和吸取,对当前二轮修志有着启示意义:要尊重首轮修志的成果,二轮修志的重点应放在首轮修志时限后对所发生的新人新事新风俗的记载和增补上,纠正首轮修志出现的错误,同时要处理好首轮修志与二轮修志的关系等等。
