胃为水谷之乡,与脾互为表里,共司升清降浊。凡饮食不节,饥饱失常,或冷热不适,都能影响胃的功能,发生病变。胃为燥土,本性喜润恶燥,所以一般以食积郁热。口渴便秘燥热之症属之于胃。又胃主受纳,如胃失和降,常见恶心,呕吐之症。
