Objective To investigate the expression and significance of β-catenin (β-cat) in primary gastric cancer and its corresponding lymph node metastasis. Methods The expression of β-cat in 28 cases of well-known gastric cancer, 70 cases of gastric cancer (48 cases with lymph node metastasis) and corresponding lymph node metastasis was detected by immunohistochemistry (S-P) method. Results The expression of β-cat in 70 cases of gastric carcinoma was 68.6%, much lower than that of normal gastric tissues (92.9%) (P <0.05). The expression of β-catenin was higher in 48 cases of primary gastric cancer and lymph node metastasis (both 41.1% and 25% respectively). The positive expression of β-cat was closely related to the differentiation, depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis (P <0.05), and was significantly associated with the primary tumor of gastric cancer and lymph node metastasis (R = 0.317, P <0.05) . Conclusion β-cat can be used as an index to judge the biological behavior of gastric cancer and provide a basis for predicting the metastasis and prognosis of gastric cancer.
