International Sprint Practices (ISP98) is the latest international convention published by ICC Publication No. 590 on April 6, 1998. It came into operation on January 1, 1999. In the past year or so, although many overseas clients, as well as many clients in Hong Kong and Maucao, have opened standby letters of credit under it, many in China are still unfamiliar with their terms and are deeply troubled about how to operate a standby letter of credit in accordance with its provisions. For this reason, this article gives a brief introduction of 10 rules and 89 of the practice of the International Standby Practice and compares it with the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP500) for the reference of those engaged in international trade.
