The biomass of a tropical rain forest ecosystem in Sabah, Malaysia, and the total amount of plant nutrients in the soil were estimated. In the soil, some elements, especially calcium, are low in content. The loss of calcium due to timber harvest after clearing is about 19% of the total amount of calcium in the ecosystem, and sustainable forestry in this area is not possible without this portion of lost calcium. The amount of calcium in biomass and the amount of exchangeable calcium in the soil are not very low. Therefore, in one or more areas where plant nutrient content is low, soil total analysis including total digestion of minerals is necessary to determine the long-term productivity of forest soils reasonably.
