中国古代因选官而有人物评议,人物评议的批评方法和标准也逐渐应用于艺术作品的品评之中。仿照人物品藻的方式评论名家书法,较早的是梁武帝时袁昂的《古今书评》。书论史上,初唐李嗣真《书后品》最早标举“逸品”说。张怀瓘则标举“神品”说。“逸品”“神品”分别是道家、儒家所追求的最高人格理想在书法作品品藻上的投射,对后世书论、画论影响深远。
