鸦片战争以来,中国近代政治思想、社会文化各方面冲突变化纷纭复杂.在世纪之交,作为“舶来品”的话剧在上海这一文化中心出现.显然,它的存在、衰亡必然与其所归属的文化思想密切相关.本文即试图从艺术与文化生活的关系入手,找寻外来艺术存活的契机以及早期话剧与所归属文化的对应关系,简略归纳出早期话剧的形态演变对当代话剧发展的现实意义.由于早期话剧本身没有统一的戏剧思想,缺乏明确的西方话剧观念,从而很大程度上呈自发状态,并且其进化性发展特征也不明显,所以笔者尝试分析几个有影响的社团,辨别其演剧特征与社会文化心理的关系.
