In April 1985, we carried out a sample survey of human health in the vicinity of a chemical industry zone. At the same time, we made a retrospective survey on the death of the population from 1982 to 1984 in the area. The survey results suggest that residents’ physical fitness, children’s growth and development levels, and urinary contents of seven elements belong to the normal range. Clinically, the most common symptom of trachoma, dental caries, and Shenyin symptoms among local residents is found. The average annual death rate in this area is 7.15 ‰; cause of death ranks first in malignant tumors, circulatory diseases ranks second. Malignant tumors in gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, followed by leukemia, the high incidence of malignant tumors may be related to environmental pollution.
