In the 1980s, the U.S. Navy embarked on a “Desktop Computer-1” project of installing computer workstations on ships for mission planning. The first system at the time was based on a personal computer. The subsequent “Desktop Computer-2” program added task-management management and application capabilities to the system. In phase 3, the Navy renamed the effort TAC-3. The TAC-3 program has added environmental indicators, increased use of safety and increased range of applications. The TAC-3 program is the basis of the Naval Copernican program, which replaces military computers with commercial computers in C ~ 3I.
