Nippon Steel Institute of Technology is established in accordance with the Japan Railway Nationalization Act. In order to devote itself to the advancement of railway technology, Japan’s only railway technology institute has made a tremendous contribution to the development of the Japanese railway. At present, Japan’s railways are hard squeezed by the increasingly strong competition of aviation and highways. In order to improve the operating efficiency of the railway under the free enterprise system, the Japanese government has proposed a courageous privatization plan. Since April 1987, Japan’s national railways will be assigned to six private passenger transport companies and one shipping company. According to the privatization plan, the Institute of Railway Technology should continue to participate in technical research commissioned by the newly established company
