琵琶经历代演奏家、制作工人们的不断改进,尤其在解放之后作了较大的改革,已经成为我国民族音乐中的重要乐器之一。它既具有著名的传统文套武套乐曲,使独奏脍炙人口而誉满国内外;又在以十二平均律排列相品音位之后,能够演奏我国现代作品与外国乐曲;在合奏、伴奏中也发挥了它的功用。一般地说,它能适应各种升种调、降种调的演奏。可是,我们应该正视现实,它在某些调中,只能演奏按音,不能利用四条空弦音,还存有极大的缺陷。琵琶上有着多种富有表现力的指法,常须由空弦散音与按音同时发音,作曲家如不了解琵琶这方面的性能,就不敢放手创作琵琶曲。在乐队中演奏现代乐曲而遇到不断转调时,在某些调号上就只能作简单的按音,不能用“扫”“摭”
