西瓜在所有瓜果中果汁最为充足,含水量高达96.6%是人们喜食的时令水果。但是西瓜好吃吐籽烦,西瓜能不能像香蕉那样没有籽呢?于是人们开始研究利用生物技术培育无籽西瓜。1938年,中国的黄昌贤曾用植物激素处理西瓜雌花,第一次获得了无籽西瓜。但由于果实小、成瓜率低而没有应用于生产。同年,日本生物学家寺田甚七使用萘乙酸和吲哚乙酸处理西瓜雌花柱头,获得多倍体西瓜。1942年,日本首次培育成功三倍体无籽西瓜。

In 1942, Japan successfully cultivated triploid seedless watermelon for the first time.
