In the light of the social and historical context of the early days of the founding of the United States, the famous short story of Washington Irving, “Rip Van Winkel,” was inspected, in which the author implied irony about many issues in his contemporary politics in the United States and the world. Including doubts about violent revolutions, especially the French Revolution, the vernacular politics of party politics in U.S. politics and the criticism of the rising nationalist sentiment in the United States. Digging out the dimensions of political irony in this story helps to better understand the historical and cultural connotations of the story and to give readers a glimpse of the social history of the United States in its early days.
