江泽民同志在十六大报告中提出要“建立与社会主义市场经济相适应;与社会主义法律规范相协调;与中华民族传统美德相承接的社会主义思想道德体系。”这一论述阐明了社会主义思想道德与经济、法律、传统美德之间的关系,是我党在新时期思想道德建设方面的理论创新。新构建的社会主义思想道德体系体现了鲜明的时代性、科学的规律性和生动的创造性,具有“与时俱进”的理论特性,是与时俱进的动态思想道德体系。
