BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with increased in-hospital mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG), and little is known about its impact on long-term survival. The impact of COPD on postoperative CABG survival was confirmed in this study. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a prospective study of 33,137 consecutive patients undergoing single CABG in northern New England between 1992-2001. Medical records linked to the National Death Index to obtain long-term mortality data. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to calculate risk ratio (HR).
