刘国夫艺术的魅力首先体现在意象的组织。他的作品既不是叙事的,也不是具象的,而是意象与抽象的结合。他的意象的组织继承了中国的传统,正如明代大画家——徐渭所说的“舍形悦影”。徐渭的一首诗言:“山人写竹略形似,只取叶底萧萧意。譬如影里看丛梢,哪得分明成个字?”。刘国夫把意象推到了具象与抽象的临界点,再在这个临界点上来回游移。
