准噶尔盆地北部除了乌伦古河为常年地表径流、沿河两岸有较发育的植被外,其他全为荒漠区。这一地区地貌上有两个突出的特点:一是荒漠的顶面多呈现高低不同的几个平坦台面,表明这里在最近第四纪时期中曾经历过数次抬升与切割剥蚀;二是荒漠区内散布着众多大小极度悬殊、深浅各不相同的封闭型洼地。
