BACKGROUND: Predicting the functional outcomes at discharge from hospital based on admission data is of great significance for understanding the prognosis and planning the outcome after discharge. Currently, the research on the balance function of stroke patients is getting more and more attention. However, Discharged at the functional outcome of the relationship reported. OBJECTIVE: To predict the functional outcome of patients with stroke at discharge from the collected data and its association with the Fugl-Meyer balance score and the Berg Balance Scale score. Design: Patients as the research object, multivariate, multivariate studies. Unit: a university hospital rehabilitation department. PARTICIPANTS: Forty patients with first stroke who met the inclusion criteria of Department of Rehabilitation and Neurology in Tongji Hospital from August 2002 to May 2003 were enrolled. Methods: The collected data of stroke patients and the functional outcomes at discharge were analyzed by single factor and multivariate analysis. The data collected included the patient’s medical history, physical examination, Fugl-Meyer balance on admission, Berg Balance Scale, Activities of daily living and functional independence score, functional independence score assessed as functional outcome at discharge. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A simple correlation analysis of the Berg Balance Scale, the Fugl-Meyer Balance Scale and functional independence assessment, and a stepwise regression analysis of the impact factors of functional independence score at discharge. Results: A simple linear correlation analysis suggested that the Berg Balance Scale and the Fugl-Meyer Balance Scale score had a strong correlation with hospitalization and discharge independence scores (P <0.001 or P <0.05). Stepwise regression analysis showed that on admission Functional independence, daily activity score, and Berg Balance Scale score predict the functional outcome at stroke. Conclusion: Discharged
