硅系列合金冶炼过程中,对入炉硅石不但有一定的粒度标准,而且对SiO_2、伴生氧化物的含量和矿石冶炼性能亦有严格要求。因为质量不同的硅石其效果各异,如使用含SiO_295%的硅石其电耗比含SiO_298%的硅石高11%。另外矿石的抗爆裂性差也是造成电耗高、炉况不正常的重要因素之一。因此,铁合金厂根据各自的炉型选择质量合适的原料基地是必要的。
