一九四九年是我国历史上极其重要的一年。那年年初,我离开上海,绕道香港到达解放区。现在把旅途中的日记抄出来,取个名称叫《北上日记》。一九四八年十一月初,辽沈战役结束,就有许多民主人士和文化界人士陆续进入解放区,真象“涓泉归海”似的。香港成为当时的中转站,遇到的熟人有一百位左右,大多是受中国共产党的邀请,在那里等待进入解放区,参加政治协商会议的。跟我接头的记得是李正文,查一九四八年的日记却没有记载,可能是当时有意略去的。只十一月二日记了一句:“杜守素来,谈近事,致远方意。”十二月二十日又有一句:“觉农来,代远方致意。”“远方”指中国共产党。同时被邀的有傅彬然,并且说墨林可以与我同行。登程的决心是将近年底下定的。从香港同乘轮船北上的二十七人中,民主人士有柳亚子、陈叔通、马寅初、俞寰澄,张絅伯诸位老前辈,文化界人士有郑振铎、宋云彬、傅彬然、曹禺诸位老朋友,还有新相识的好多位,大多数都年过半百,可是兴奋的心情却还象青年。因为大家看得很清楚,中国即将出现一个崭新的局面,并且认为,这一回航海决非寻常的旅行,而是去参与一项极其伟大的工作。至于究竟是什么样的工作,应该怎样去做,自己能不能胜任,就我个人而言,当时是相当模糊的。同行的诸位决不会跟我一样,可惜后来没有机会细谈。现在大多数人已经作古,重温这一段往事,不免怅惘。为了以大团圆为结笔,日记抄到三月二十五日为止,那是旅程结束之后的第七天了。一九八一年五月三十一日记 1949 is an extremely important year in the history of our country.
