研究地层的方法和目的有以下几个方面:第一、利用生物演化和生物羣的发展阶段来划分地层的先后順序;第二、利用岩相建造和岩石性质来說明地层形成条件和存在规律;第三、利用元素活动与集結来說明地层的形成条件和发展規律。也就是从生物地层学、岩石地层学和地层的地球化学三个方面来研究地层,其目的是在于解决地层的时代、地层的岩性規律和地层的元素分布規律,从而了解自然并开闢利用自然及尋找資源的道路。
