从北朝之天真浑朴到唐代之成熟博大,隋代是一个十分重要的彩塑风格过渡时期。隋代艺术已具备了趋向成熟的诸多因素,这在彩塑艺术中有着集中而明显的表现。莫高窟隋代彩塑压缩了浮塑的数量,而增加了圆塑的数量,为彩塑的发展扩展了空间,为形象的完善、性格的塑造做好了准备。与北朝相比,这无疑是走向成熟的一种表现,这种样式的选择说明了莫高窟隋代彩塑正趋向成熟并为唐代彩塑的真正成熟奠定了基础。
