Early reports often believe that pregnancy with acute pancreatitis is a special cause of pregnancy itself. The authors conclude with a different conclusion from 21 surgically and early postpartum (within 6 weeks of delivery) patients with gallstone pancreatitis treated surgically that the gallstone itself is pancreatitis even though pregnancy favors gallstone development Special etiology From 1965 to 1987, the author performed 1,964 cholecystectomy on acute and chronic cholecystitis. 226 cases (11%) had gallstone pancreatitis. Eleven of 152 patients (7%) were pregnant. Another 10 patients developed gallstone pancreatitis within 6 weeks postpartum, and 21 patients ranged in age from 19 to 34 years. Twenty-one patients underwent cholecystectomy with or without surgical cholangiography and cholangiopancreatography. None of the 11 cases underwent surgery during pregnancy
