W.H.能斯特(Nernst)是现代物理化学的奠基人之一。学习普通化学时,就知道能斯特方程 E=E~0+RT/nF ln[OX]/[Red] (1)它表示组成电极的电对中氧化态与还原态物种浓度与电极电位的关系。但是生物学家和生理学家认为能斯特方程是指膜两侧的某种离子X~(n+)浓度[X~(n+)]_A和[X~(n+)]_B之比与膜电位Δψ的关系:
