  二、 阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
  阅读下列材料,从各小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案。
  A
My mother asked me to go to several yard sales with her one cool morning. We finally stopped at a pleasant house in the woods. The elderly owner told me that he and his wife were retired teachers. As we were searching, I heard the gentleman’s wife say her name to someone, and I immediately realized who she was. She looked at me and said,“You’re Lisa Miller.” I looked at her surprisedly, for it had been nearly thirty years since I had been in her class.
My mother immediately said sorry to her for any trouble I might have made. She thought that if this woman remembered me after so many years, I must have done something terrible. My teacher looked at my mother and softly said, “Oh, no, she was very good.”
My teacher explained that during the last week of school, I brought her a plant from my mother’s garden. It was a lamb’s ear. She took us to her garden where she planted the lamb’s ear. Over the years it spread. As I looked down her driveway (车道) with lamb’s ears on both sides, she said, “Every day when I leave my house and drive up the driveway, I think of you. And when I come home they greet me, I think of you.” Tears came into my eyes. There at her home was a piece of my life that she had raised.
At that moment, she taught me more about life than I could imagine. We give pieces of ourselves every day without thought. We hardly ever imagine the effects (影响) that we have on others’ lives. In the end it isn’t the big things that matter, but the small things that make all the difference in the world.

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. “Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to
ask. I have a friend. I’d like to bring him home with me.”
“Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”
“There’s something you should know,” the son continued, “he was injured pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine (地雷) and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us.”
“We’re sorry to hear that, son. But, maybe we can help him find somewhere to live.”
“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”
“Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden to us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building. The police believed he had killed himself.
The grief-stricken (悲痛欲绝的) parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue (太平间) to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

Henry had a problem. Ms. Green, his teacher, was always saying something good about him. She said so many nice things about him that the other kids seemed to believe that he was the teacher’s pet. Henry wanted to do good work in school, but he didn’t enjoy the thought of being considered “ Mister Perfect” .
Henry guessed from the very first day in class that Mrs. Green might favor him. Ms. Green had mentioned in front of the whole class that she was especially happy to have Jason because she had had his brother two years earlier, and she knew Henry was from a fine family.
When there were special jobs to do, Ms. Green usually called on Henry. He sometimes wished that he could never be seen. He liked Ms. Green, but being treated in a special way all the time was losing his friends and making him the target (目标) of cruel comments and jokes.
On one dreadful day, Ms. Green told Henry in front of the other students that he had a smile just like his brother Jack’s. That did it. His classmates started calling him “Smiley” during the noon hour and after school. It was awful!
Henry’s mother knew Ms. Green very well, and Henry wondered if he might ask his mom to discuss the problem with Ms. Green. He hated to get his mom involved (牵涉), and he hated to make a big deal of the problem with Ms. Green. After all, she wasn’t trying to embarrass him.
