Our analysis of the ecological footprint of coral reef fisheries, in particular the reef food trade (FT), shows that current consumption in many countries exceeds the estimated sustainable global, regional and local reef production per capita. Hong Kong, through its FT demand, accounts for 25% of annual reef fish production in the region of 135260-286560t in Southeast Asia, more than 8.3 times the biological productivity of the region. The reef fishing industry needs more than 2.5-6 times of the sustainable production in the Indian Ocean, Pacific and Southeast Asia. In contrast, most Pacific islands depend on their own reef fisheries for subsistence, with local demand being less than 20% of Oceania’s total capacity. FT requires up to 40% of estimated reef production in Southeast Asia and almost all of its estimated sluggish fish production per year. Our research analysis highlights the unsustainability of FT and the urgent need for regional management and protection of Indian Ocean-Pacific coral reef fisheries.
