埃及短篇小说在1952年革命之后,以现实生活为题材,抨击社会上一切落后现象,及时地反映了人们的愿望与追求,有了较大的发展。目前,短篇小说在文学领域中已占有引人注目的地位。近二十年来,埃及又涌现出一批新作家,尤素福·格伊德(YousufuAl—geyide)和赫利·舍莱比(Heiri Shelaibi)即是其中的佼佼者。他们的作品均为首次介绍到我国。尤素福·格伊德生于1949年。《艾哈迈德师傅和妹妹巴希娅》译自他1981年的短篇小说集《擦干眼泪》。赫利·舍莱比生于1938年,因家境贫寒,中途辍学,当过农业工人,后依靠自学,顽强奋斗,得以跻身文坛。至今,他已著有《一个埃及农民在欧洲国家》、《恶棍们》、《老爷》、《跑马场外的游戏》、《诡诈人》等反映埃及农业工人生活、社会上种种弊病的长篇小说、剧作,还有若干部评论文集。他的作品富有生活气息,在技巧上兼收本国传统和当代的新颖手法,受到阿拉伯文坛的重视。他已有多部作品被介绍到欧洲。他于1980年获埃及国家小说鼓励奖和“艺术与科学”勋章,现为发行量较大的《广播与电视》杂志专职作家。《酋长在埃及奇遇记》译自他1981年短篇小说集《窃贼阁下》,作者托来自海湾国家一名商人之口,讲述了在今日埃及的遭遇,反映了两种人的思想情操,揭露了唯利是图、百般钻营的骗子,歌颂了不为钱财所动的普通人的品格。

He has introduced many works to Europe.
