Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)recog-nizes diseases simulating rheumatic and rheuma-toid arthritis as diagnosed in modern medicine.Inthe chapter on“Bi”(arthritis)in Nei Jing SuWen(Plain Questions of Internal Classics of theWarring States Period(475-221 B.C.),“Xingbi”(行痹 arthritis with migrating pain),“Tongbi”(痛痹 arthritis with severe pain)and “Zhuobi”(着痹 arthritis with fixed pain and heaviness)compare with rheumatic and rheumatoid arthritis.The term wind-damp(风湿)referring to a speci-fic disease first appeared in the chapter on spasm,damp and heat in Jin Kui Yao Lue(Synopsis ofPrescriptions of the Golden Chamber),a workpublished in the late Eastern Hart dynasty,200-210 A.D.It says,“the disease that causes generalpain and fever which become severe toward theend of the day is called wind-damp”(rheuma-
