尔朱荣,字天宝,生于北魏孝文帝太和十七年(公元493年),北魏北秀容(朔州南)人,契胡族。尔朱荣的祖先因居于尔朱川(今山西西北部流经神池、五寨、保德县之朱家川),故以尔朱为姓氏。到孝文帝时代尔朱新兴被任命为秀容(今忻州西北)酋长。魏孝明帝时,传位于儿子尔朱荣。尔朱荣派兵镇压了河北大起义,将六镇义军据为己有,并在降兵中提拔了若干将领,如高欢、宇文泰、侯景等人。
