The translation of the historical and cultural barriers, the same original produced a variety of versions, making the translator of the original meaning of the transmission has become more difficult. In a sense, the same original multiple translations form a complementary relationship, which reflects the diversification of translation standards. In the meantime, it is of strategic importance to implement the diversification of literary translation standards in the modern multicultural society (Chi Qingli, 2007). Alienation and naturalization are two different translation strategies that deal with linguistic and cultural factors, and they can be said to be somehow further extensions of literal translation and free translation. This paper first introduces the definition of alienation and naturalization, and then elaborates the complementary relationship between the two in translation through the examples of alienation and naturalization in two different versions of The Great Gatsby.
