Objective To investigate the expression and correlation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in breast cancer and explore its significance. Methods From January 2006 to December 2006, 20 patients with modified radical mastectomy in Fujian Medical University Affiliated Union Hospital were treated with paraffin-embedded tissue. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of VEGF and MMP-2. In the same period, 20 normal breast tissues served as controls. Results The positive expression rates of VEGF and MMP-2 in breast cancer tissues were 65% (13/20) and 60% (12/20), respectively, and there were significant differences compared with normal tissues (P<0.01). The expression of VEGF and MMP-2 was closely related (kappa=0.894, P<0.01). Conclusions The expression of VEGF and MMP-2 in breast cancer tissues is significantly increased and there is a significant correlation between them. Both of them play an important role in the development of breast cancer.
