Following the discovery of AIDS-causing HIV-1 in 1984, West Africa again isolated HIV-2 from AIDS patients in 1986. HIV-2 and HIV-1 are transmitted in the same way, with similar opportunistic infections and AIDS. However, HIV-2 infections appear to develop slowly and less immunodeficiently, with less early HIV-2 infection. As the disease progresses, HIV-2 infectivity increases, but the duration of infectious increases is shorter. In addition, the geographical distribution of HIV-2 and HIV-1 is not the same. There are fewer reports of HIV-2 infection in the United States.
