《岩波数学辞典》是日本二百三十五位数学界知名学者集体编写而成的,共一千一百多页。这部辞典,论参加编写人数之多,条目之广,内容之丰富,是世界数学典籍中所罕见的。它不仅包括一般数学辞典中所列名词、概念、人物成果等辞条,而且还特别对数学基础论、古今数学发展简史、著名数学家传记等,设有许多专门栏目。为了便于数学工作者的需要,在辞典正文的后边,又附有“公式”、“数表”“杂志、丛书介绍”等。这部辞典,不仅起着数学工具书的作用,而且还具有数学史研究的重要意义。因此,它出版后,深得国际数学界的好评,它的中译本即将由科学出版社出版。为了使大家更好地了解这部辞典的编辑意图、选目原则和编写出版经过,迎接它的中译本的出版,特根据日本数学会会长弥永昌吉为本辞典所写的《第一版序言》、《第一版增订
