香港位于亚热带,面积逾400平方哩,山明水秀,峰峦起伏,幽谷山涧无数。夏天温暖潮湿,冬天冷凉干燥,山野间花木繁生,正是野生兰生长之乡。品种超过120个,其中少部分是气生兰,附生于树上或有腐叶土的石上,而附近环境亦要终年湿润通风,光线适中。大部分的地生兰,匍伏于清凉山涧间、灌木丛下的疏松肥沃泥地或腐叶土上,也有生于土地湿润、通风良好、光线强烈的山溪边或潮湿风大的山顶上。香港气生兰植株最大的是蕉兰,花有豹纹,但比较细小,根叶植株似万代兰,蒴果很大,像一只小香蕉,生长于光量与湿气充足的石上;而香港最小的兰要算是婴毛兰,长于高山有湿气、通风和光线良好的石上,与绒毛状的青苔共生,球茎似翠玉色的小绿豆,在两列叶中长出黄绿色的小花。当然,最美丽出色,花和叶均具观赏价值,植株细小适中者,非香港拖鞋兰莫属。其中有紫红色、紫绿色与白色相间的顶瓣,而紫红色有斑点花瓣及紫红色的唇瓣(鞋头),配衬得相当可爱美观,原初大量长于湿凉的山野溪边或腐殖土上,可惜现在已很难在山涧间见到。
