古尔德现已出版了七部散文作品。本刊选登的《体面和荣誉》(Decency and Honour)是收在中篇小说集《永久的伪装》(TheEnduring Disguises)中的三个中篇小说之一。《体面和荣誉》以70年代初的堪培拉为背景,以温和而不失幽默的手法描述了作者那代人的大学生涯以及其后的生活经历。青年人的激情,理想主义的追求,对民主和平的憧憬,这一切都发生在遥远的澳洲,却又和世界各地乃至我国自身的情形如此相似。当然,作者也以深刻的笔触揭示了一些隐藏在灵魂深处的偏见,包括种族歧视这类令民主迫求者自身所深恶痛绝的现象。而这些既是澳大利亚社会生活中所独具的又不失其普遍的意义。穿插在故事中的一些景物描写则使那片异国风光犹如近在眼前,而富有诗意的语言又增添了阅读的乐趣。唯一遗憾的是,由于篇幅所限,《体面和荣誉》只是部分选载,未译部分用简单的语言介绍归纳,仅起联接内容的作用。特此说明。《永久的伪装》由安格斯及罗伯逊出版公司于1988年在澳大利亚出版,并于同车在英国出版。
Gould now published seven essays. Decency and Honor, selected for publication, is one of the three novella’s in The Enduring Disguises. Demeanor and honor, based in Canberra in the early 1970s, described the author’s college career and subsequent life experiences in a gentle and humorous manner. The passion of young people, the pursuit of idealism, and the vision of democratic peace all take place in far-off Australia, yet in a way similar to that of the rest of the world and even our own. Of course, the author also reveals with deep brushstrokes some of the prejudices hidden in the depths of the soul, including the abhorrence of racial discrimination on the part of the democratic opponents themselves. These are unique to the social life of Australia without losing their universal significance. Some portrayals interspersed in the story make the exotic scenery as close as it is, and the poetic language adds another element of reading pleasure. The only regret is that due to space limitations, “decent and honorary” is only partially selected, the part not translated into simple language introduction, only played the role of the link content. Hereby explain. “Perpetual Camouflage” was published by Angus and Robertson Publishing in Australia in 1988 and was published in the UK in the same car.
