To the best of our knowledge, books appeared in the Middle Ages. Before that, the closest thing to it was papyrus. People stuck a piece of papyrus together and made a long scroll. The Romans call it “Volumeu.” The word “volume” in English evolved from it. Parchment paper and vellum, which appeared in the mid-15th century, replaced papyrus paper. Parchment is made of sheepskin or goatskin, and vellum is made of calfskin. Paper made from this material can only be written on one side, cut to the shape and size of the paper, and strung along one side of the leather to make the book of that time. It was not until the Middle Ages that a book similar to what we now print.
