Platinum silicon infrared detector technology has matured in the past 15 years, is now being applied to a new generation of missile seeker. The extent to which a platinum detector is used will depend on several factors, including the cost per pixel and the overall performance of the device. A pixel is a pixel that represents the minimum sample of video data used in signal processing. The U.S. Army and Hughes Aircraft Company are planning to apply the platinum-based detector to non-line-of-sight infrared missiles. Detectors made of this material can also be used on seeker heads for other missiles and collect radiation data on missile launchers. Infrared systems made of platinum can also be used for aerial reconnaissance.
