The surface contents of C species on iron catalysts for thehydlogenation of CO were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The surface atomic concentrations for the COS poisoned catalysts atdifferent positions in the reactor showed that the Fe and S contents decreasedwith the increase of the depth along the catalyst bed. There are four kinds ofcarbon on COS poisoned catalysts. The content of metallic carbide decreasedas the sulfur fed to catalyst decreased. The content of carbon in COO-increased with the increase of fixed-bed depth. There are four kinds ofCarbon on catalyst poisoned by oxygen contained in H2/CO stream. Thecontents of metallic carbide, carbon in COO-- and carbon in CO of oxygenpoisoned catalyst increased as compared with that of reduced catalystHowever, the content of contamination carbon decreased when catalyst waspoisoned by O2 in H2/CO with the concotation of 5. 16×10-3(% volume).
