一、引言《红楼梦》是中国古典文学名著中一朵绚丽的奇葩,这部文学巨著以封建社会的贵族家庭为主线,真实生动地描写了中国封建社会末期的社会生活百态。小说中的贵族世家贾府地位显赫,上下共有300多口人,人物关系纷繁复杂,人物间在语言交际过程中使用的称谓层出不穷,使用规则极为复杂,体现了鲜明的中国文化特色。因此,对《红楼梦》中的称谓语翻译进行研究,对于当今典籍外译中称谓语的翻译具有启示意义。本文主要运用语境翻译模式,简要分析杨宪益夫妇(简称杨译)和David Hawks(简称霍译)翻译的《红楼梦》译本中部分称谓语,对其中一些称谓的翻译情况进行对比研究。
I. Introduction “Dream of Red Mansions” is a colorful and wonderful work in the classics of Chinese classical literature. This literary masterpiece takes the aristocratic family in the feudal society as the main line and vividly depicts the social life in the late feudal society in China. The aristocratic family Jia in the novel enjoys a prominent position. There are more than 300 people in the top and bottom. The relationship between characters is complicated and the appellations used in the process of verbal communication between characters emerge in an endless stream. The rules of use are extremely complicated and reflect the distinctive Chinese cultural features. Therefore, to study the translation of appellations in A Dream of Red Mansions is of enlightenment to the translation of appellations in the translation of ancient books. This paper mainly uses the contextual translation model to briefly analyze some of the appellations in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi and David Hawks and to make a contrastive study on the translation of some of the appellations.
