Tungsten After 1986, the tungsten industry suffered the worst situation in recent years after many years of recession. The price dropped 30% from 1985, dropping to its lowest level in 14 years. Concentrate consumption dropped 17% from 1985, with many large mines closed and many large mines slashing production. The Chinese continue to sell their concentrates at the lowest prices in Western markets while selling intermediate products (ammonium paratungstate and ferroterr) at slightly higher prices than their concentrate, resulting in sluggish prices and subsequent spiral declines. Lower prices in South American manufacturing plants and in the United States of America’s GSA have further driven down prices.
