自古以来,湖北就有着“唯楚有才”的美誉,教育水平长期处在中国的前列。鸦片战争后,中国社会发生了巨大的变化,沿海地区的教育得到充分的发展,相对而言,此时的湖北教育已经滞后于其他许多省份。1889年晚清名臣张之洞任湖广总督,在任职的17年里,他改造旧学堂,创办新式学堂,大力提倡留学教育,一系列的举措使得湖北教育呈现出蔚为大观之势,到19世纪末20世纪初,湖北成为中国之教育强省。此文旨在探讨张之洞的兴学对晚清湖北教育发展的贡献以及这种发展对湖北乃至全国的影响。
Since ancient times, Hubei has the reputation of “only Chu and talented people”, and its education level has long been at the forefront of China. After the Opium War, great changes took place in Chinese society. Education in the coastal areas has been fully developed. In contrast, Hubei education at this time lags behind many other provinces. In 1889, late Qing Dynasty official Zhang Zhidong became the Governor of Huguang. During his 17 years in office, he renovated the old school, founded a new school and advocated study abroad education. A series of measures made Hubei education a grand spectacle. By the end of the 19th century At the beginning of the 20th century, Hubei became a province of education of China. This article aims to discuss the contribution of Zhang Zhidong’s Xingxue to Hubei’s educational development in the late Qing Dynasty and the impact of this development on Hubei and the whole country.
