1 INTRODUCTION On May 4, 1934, when this Institute was recognized as Royal Charter, first-rate engineers were able to review their experiences from beginning to end to examine the available supporting infrastructure for the construction of Prospects for the extraordinary development of new materials technology. Riveted structural steels have been well identified, and bolting and field welded connections have been developed and are being thoroughly tested. Reinforced concrete structures are in widespread use, and Freyssinet, just completed the Plougastel bridge in Brittany, has developed a prestress system and is building a plant for the manufacture of prefabricated prestressed beams.
