The use of situational irony as a major type of irony in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has succeeded in promoting the development of the novel’s plot and increasing the dramatic suspense of the novel. Moreover, the scene of irony in the novel is often related to Haque’s juvenile identity and the romanticism of the transcendentalism symbolizing the “natural” nature of the Mississippi River. As a result, it highlights the fictional hypocrisy of so-called “civilized” society The theme of critical realism profoundly demonstrated the absurdity of the black serfdom and the raucous racial discrimination prevailing in the South American society at that time. Based on the typical example of the scene irony in the novel, this article points out that the repeated use of scene irony in the novel expresses Mark Twain’s strong condemnation of black slavery and racial prejudice, deepening the theme of racism in the novel.
