Early industrial standards for the measurement of aero-mechanical noise were replaced in 1971 by the American National Standard ANSI S5.1-1971 “Test Specification for Noise Measurement of Pneumatic Equipment.” This standard was developed jointly by the (United States) Compressed Air and Gas Association (CAGI) and the European Committee of Compressed Air, Vacuum Pumps and Air Tools Manufacturers (RNEUROP). It is suitable for a variety of pneumatic machinery, including pneumatic tools, intended for on-site practical testing, not for use in acoustical laboratories. Later international standard draft ISO/DIS3481/I was not approved. At present, the revised ANSI standard has been drafted and publicly solicited opinions in 1981.
